Job Overview: Accountant Position.
Role Summary
The Accountant will play a crucial role in supporting Impanuro Girls Initiative's financial operations by ensuring accurate record-keeping, effective budget monitoring, and strict compliance with organizational policies and donor requirements. This position is central to maintaining the organization's financial integrity and transparency while supporting its mission to empower girls across Rwanda.
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, dependable, and proactive in managing financial operations, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with both internal policies and external donor requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Accounting & Financial Records Management.
As the Accountant at IGI, you will be responsible for:
- Recording and maintaining accurate financial transactions in the QuickBooks accounting system
- Managing comprehensive bookkeeping records, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger entries, and reconciliations (bank accounts, cash, and advances)
- Establishing and maintaining proper financial documentation and organized filing systems for easy retrieval and audit purposes
- Ensuring all financial data is accurate, up-to-date, and properly documented
2. Financial Reporting & Budget Monitoring.
Your reporting and budget responsibilities will include:
- Preparing monthly and quarterly financial reports that provide clear insights into the organization's financial position.
- Supporting the preparation of donor financial reports in strict accordance with grant agreements and donor specifications.
- Monitoring both project-specific and organizational budgets, identifying and flagging variances promptly.
- Leading the annual budget development process in collaboration with program teams and leadership.
- Supporting cash flow planning and forecasting to ensure the organization maintains healthy financial operations.
3. Compliance & Internal Controls.
Ensuring compliance and maintaining strong controls is critical. You will:
- Ensure full compliance with NGO financial policies and donor requirements across all operations.
- Verify supporting documentation for all payments and procurement activities.
- Ensure compliance with tax obligations and statutory requirements in Rwanda.
- Support both internal and external audits, including preparing documentation and addressing audit queries professionally and promptly.
4. Operations Support
Your operational support duties will encompass:
- Processing payments, advances, and expense liquidations in a timely and accurate manner.
- Supporting payroll processing and ensuring proper statutory deductions.
- Coordinating with program and procurement teams on financial matters to ensure smooth operations.
- Performing other finance-related duties as assigned by the Finance Lead or Executive Director.
Qualifications & Experience Required.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Advanced degree preferred (Master's in Accounting, Finance, MBA, or related discipline)
- Professional qualification (CPA, ACCA, or equivalent) is an added advantage and highly desirable.
Professional Experience:
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in accounting or financial management with progressive responsibility.
- Proven experience working with donor-funded programs and understanding of donor reporting requirements.
- Strong track record of managing financial operations in NGOs or similar organizations.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting standards
- Proficiency in QuickBooks or similar accounting software (experience with QuickBooks specifically is essential)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and MS Office Suite
- Familiarity with financial management systems and tools
Personal Competencies:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all work.
- Problem-solving mindset with ability to identify issues and propose solutions.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive financial information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (knowledge of Kinyarwanda is an advantage)
- Ability to adapt quickly in a complex and sometimes volatile environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
