Applications are now open for the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship 2027, a prestigious postgraduate scholarship for young African leaders who demonstrate strong academic ability, leadership potential, and commitment to positive social impact. The scholarship supports talented students from across Africa to pursue postgraduate studies at leading universities in South Africa while participating in a leadership development programme.
The scholarship is offered by the Mandela Rhodes Foundation in partnership with universities across South Africa. Inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the program combines financial support with leadership training to develop future African leaders.
SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship provides comprehensive funding for postgraduate study, including:
- Full tuition and registration fees paid directly to the university ·
- Accommodation and meal allowances
- Study materials allowance
- Medical aid allowance
- Personal allowance
- Research and conference grants (upon request)
- Economy-class flights for international scholars travelling to and from South Africa
- Allowances are paid twice a year, and scholars must submit proof of registration and academic progress reports.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of an African country
- Be between 19 and 29 years old
- Have strong academic results (usually above 70% or upper second class)
- Demonstrate leadership experience and community involvement
- Have completed or be completing an undergraduate degree before 1 January 2027
- The scholarship is open to students across Africa, but recipients must study at a university in South Africa.

The scholarship supports postgraduate studies in any field, including:
- Honours degrees
- Master's degrees
- However, the program does not fund MBA programs, block courses, or programs delivered primarily online.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Applicants must submit the following documents in English:
- Academic transcripts
- Degree certificates
- Passport or ID copy
- Three letters of recommendation
- Two short essays (personal journey and leadership principles)
- Recommendation letters must be uploaded directly by referees through the application platform.
